  1. Toronto Business Machines left 135 Jarvis St. in about 2011. That's the last date on their website, which is still active, but the phone number is out of service.

The Google Street View of 135 Jarvis was taken in 2011, and shows a hostel in that location. I confirmed this when I was in that neighbourhood, last week.

There's a Markham address & phone number listed on a directory site, but that number is out of service too.

So it looks like Toronto Business Machines is defunct.

  2. Actually, I suggest removing Toronto Business Machines from any list about typewriters. The fellow at the business (there is still a sign outside) says they have ribbons and do repairs, but he's a scammer. Told me he had ribbons when I called. When I went in, he told me that my 1967 Olympia took a 9/16" ribbon "if he remembered correctly" and that it was $50. It doesn't look as if he has any typewriters or office equipment beyond the phone he's answering. It looks as if he's the office for some dodgy residential units and tries to rip people off if they walk in looking for Toronto Business Machines.

  4. Actually, Toronto Business Machines still does exist and is in fact at 135 Jarvis. Phone number: 416-361-0053. TBM no longer exists as the large organization that once was when it was located on Richmond St. It seems that the owner now runs a housing complex at this location and still does some repairs on the side. His rate is $135/hour. I dropped off an old portable Underwood for repair in the spring of 2016 and after charging me $135 he said that the problem was not evident but that if I paid for another couple of hours, he would investigate further, however, there was no guarantee that he oould repair it as if it needed new parts, he wasn't sure that he could obtain them. If you do want to contact him, it is best to call and arrange a time to meet as he isn't always there.
Just thought I'd add this contribution.

  5. check out www.torontotypewriters.com, we happily sell and service typewriters in the Toronto Area. A general servicing of a manual typewriter with a new ribbon included is around $100. We also sell a variety of vintage and antique machines.
